Context

Through wolves as symbols, this work looks at our bond with nature. The piece is inspired by wolf worship in Yurika Saitos’s hometown, where a mountain-top site honors wolves as protectors. Wolves were once seen as messengers of the gods and guardians of the fields. They’re now extinct in Japan, but their spirit lives on—in the mountains, in the farmland, and in the people who visit. The title GOD DOG comes from the affectionate name O-inu-sama, what people lovingly call wolves (‘honored dog’). Wild wolves remind us of the delicate balance between humans and nature. We can feel a connection with it—across lands and through time, from ancient traditions to today.“阿” “吽” is A-Z in Japanese syllabary.

About Yurika Saito

Yurika Saito is a Tokyo-born mixed-media artist currently living and working in Berlin since 2019. Her practice centers on painting, embroidery, and natural dyeing techniques, with a deep focus on nature's cycles, the fleeting moment, and the eternal connections within the natural world. Drawing inspiration from landscapes and plants encountered during her travels as a teenager, she creates evocative works that explore themes of the human heart, life’s beauty, and the intricate relationships between living beings and their environments. Saito often uses traditional natural dyeing, such as Kusaki-zome, blending ancient methods with contemporary artistic expression to invite reflection on sustainability, time, and harmony. Her art weaves delicate threads of painting and textile work to craft meditative pieces that resonate with sensitivity and awareness, contributing a unique voice to the dialogue around nature and art in today’s global context.
