Context

La Magicienne is inspired by the Tarot card The Magician, a figure who bridges the spiritual and material realms. She embodies the power of manifestation, creative skill, and the alchemical process of transforming intention into reality.

The drawing was made under self hypnosis with ink. Her body is formed from hair—a symbol of continuity between the physical and the divine. Hair, both intimate and eternal, serves as a medium through which the invisible takes shape. In place of her eyes, the symbol of infinity evokes a continuous flow of energy and a transcendental vision.

Etched into the skin, La Magicienne becomes an emblem of inner power—a presence that reminds us of the innate potential to shape reality through imagination and ritual.

About Una Szeemann

Una Szeemann, born in Locarno, Switzerland, is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in Zürich and Tegna. Her work spans video, installation, sculpture, and photography, often experimenting with unconventional materials and drawing inspiration from psychoanalysis, anthropology, and biology. Szeemann’s artistic practice explores the hidden forces and processes of nature and the unconscious mind, seeking to make visible the invisible and engage viewers in a dialogue between reality and imagination. One of her notable works, Future Fossils (2022), captures the transformative power of nature and questions the balance of power between humans and plants through evocative sculptural forms. Integrating states of consciousness such as hypnosis into her creative process, Szeemann’s art invites reflection on deeper psychological and organic connections. She has exhibited widely, including at Manifesta 11 in Zurich, the Venice Biennale, and Kunsthaus Zurich, and previously taught Fine Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts and HEAD Geneva.
