Context

This is an extended excerpt from a 2025 work by Sophia Novosel entitled “Motherhood.” It depicts three women floating on clouds and explores the feeling of becoming a mother. Floating on cloud nine, yet losing the ground beneath your feet. Never before have you felt so connected and yet so alone. Without filters, this work conveys the feeling of being in a parallel world, an explosion of emotions that no one really talks about.

About Sophia Novosel

Sophia Novosel is a Vienna-born visual artist who has resided and created in Berlin since 2019, acclaimed for her vivid paintings, prints, and mixed media works. Novosel’s artistic practice focuses on the lived experiences, challenges, and empowerment of women, blending bright colors and mystical elements that explore femininity, cultural heritage, and vulnerability. Her art transforms personal and collective stories into “Wonderful Utopias”—portraits and scenes celebrating female resilience while confronting themes of pride, safety, and society’s rigid norms. Working primarily with acrylics, watercolors, and dispersion paints, Novosel invites viewers to find solace and strength in diversity, transforming adversity into sensitivity and courage. Her path as an artist began early, her sketchbooks filled with dreams, and her Berlin chapter now sees her work exhibited internationally and sought after for its modern, celebratory spirit and expressive depth.
