Context

The scorpion is a reference to the same titled oil painting “De la Muerte“ from Roman Frechen’s series of dangerous animals. These animals are powerful symbols and portraits of actual mighty characters to give power to those who have them on their walls or skin.

About Roman Frechen

Roman Frechen, born in 1990 in Cologne, is a rising star in the Berlin art scene, known for his captivating blend of Japanese aesthetics and Western artistic traditions. Frechen's journey as an artist took an intriguing turn when he studied Japanese painting at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, immersing himself in the rich cultural tapestry of the East. Upon returning to Germany, he became a master student under the tutelage of Valérie Favre, further refining his unique artistic vision.
Frechen's work is a mesmerising fusion of pop-cultural imagery and old master painting techniques. His canvases transport Japanese beauty ideals, fantastical objects, shrine maidens, vampires, and mythological figures into the present day. With a somnambulistic assuredness, Frechen creates a cosmos of figures that seamlessly blends manga aesthetics with the portrait artistry reminiscent of Velázquez and da Vinci. This hyper-aestheticisation of the seemingly trivial generates a captivating visual game, where surfaces become permeable, reflecting our media-saturated reality. Currently based in Berlin, Frechen continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art, leaving viewers spellbound by his hypnotic and suggestive paintings.
