About Moritz R®
Moritz R®, aka Moritz Reichelt, was born in 1955 in Halle (Saale), East Germany, but grew up in West Germany. As a child prodigy, he debuted in the art world at age 12 with a painting exhibited at Documenta IV in 1968, marking the start of a prolific artistic and musical career. R® is a multifaceted artist known as a painter, musician, and pioneer of Germany’s New Wave scene, co-founding the influential electronic band Der Plan and the independent label Ata Tak. His artwork spans painting, stage design, record cover art, and illustration, famously blending pop culture with avant-garde aesthetics. He also embraced the revival of Tiki art in the 1980s and is recognized as Germany’s first painter in this genre. Over decades, he worked on diverse projects, including TV and film production designs and virtual environments, notably designing for Universal Music Deutschland’s Second Life presence. His hybrid practice reflects a keen exploration of multimedia and cultural critique, making him a significant figure in contemporary German art and music.
