Context

Radio is one of the media that Melián has used for many years to bring her audio works into the world. Radio, both analogue and digital, connects her with the world wherever she is. For the radio edition of the Hamburg magazine “Kultur & Gespenster”  in 2012, she produced the image series Radiotürme, a series of drawings created with a sewing machine – embroidered lines on paper. For WORKS ON SKIN, she has now taken up one of the motifs again: a ship with a transmission mast on the high seas – a pirate radio station.

About Michaela Melián

Michaela Melián is a multifaceted artist who defies easy categorisation. A true Renaissance woman, she seamlessly blends music, visual art, and academia in her creative pursuits. Melián's journey began with classical music training, but she soon traded her cello for a bass guitar when co-founding the post-punk band F.S.K. in 1980. Her artistic evolution continued as she delved into fine arts, graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Melián's work is a testament to her boundless curiosity and social consciousness. She crafts immersive audiovisual experiences that challenge viewers to confront historical and contemporary issues. Her installations often interweave personal memories with meticulously researched historical facts, creating a tapestry of sound, image, and emotion. In 2010, Melián took on the role as Professor for Temporal Media at the HFBK Hamburg, sharing her expertise with a new generation of artists. Her contributions to the art world have been recognised with numerous awards, not only in visual arts but also in audio drama production. Melián's artistic approach is characterised by her ability to break down boundaries between genres and media. She frequently creates site-specific works for public spaces, extending her reach beyond traditional gallery settings. Her innovative use of virtual space as a platform for artistic intervention has positioned her at the forefront of contemporary art practices.
