Context

For more than a decade, the cloud has been a recurring element in Michael Sailstorfers’s oeuvre. The original sculpture consists of two intertwined lorry tyre tubes and has been repeatedly modified over the course of time. Now it can be worn on the skin as an abstraction of an impossible mathematical space, body or knot.

About Michael Sailstorfer

Michael Sailstorfer, born on January 12, 1979, in Velden, Bavaria, is a German sculptor and installation artist who has made waves in the contemporary art world with his unconventional approach to everyday objects. Growing up as the son of a sculptor, Sailstorfer was immersed in the art world from an early age, attending gallery openings with his father. This early exposure laid the foundation for his future artistic endeavours. Sailstorfer's journey in the arts began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under notable artists like Olaf Metzel. His time at Goldsmith College in London further broadened his artistic horizons. Sailstorfer's work is characterised by its transformative nature, often taking mundane objects and repurposing them in surprising and thought-provoking ways. From cleaning forest floors to create "artificial" spaces to crafting clouds from truck tyre inner tubes, Sailstorfer's art challenges perceptions and blurs the lines between natural and man-made worlds. His innovative approach has earned him numerous accolades, including the Ars-Viva-Prize, solidifying his position as one of the most promising artists of his generation.
