About Marta Vovk
Marta Vovk, born in 1989 in Lviv, Ukraine, is a Berlin-based contemporary artist known for her vibrant paintings and installations that explore the intersection of pop culture and existential questions. She studied Fine Arts at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin, with additional studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Daniel Richter, reflecting a strong foundation in contemporary painting. Vovk’s work often bridges so-called “high” and “low” art, drawing inspiration from graffiti, media, advertising, and the cartoon imagery of her childhood, recontextualizing these elements into critical reflections on identity, culture, and politics. Through her use of acrylics, spray paint, and varnish, she creates images that blend banality with pathos, addressing themes such as political symbolism, societal tensions, and personal histories, including reflections on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Vovk has exhibited widely in Europe, with notable solo shows like "KRAFT LIEBE HOFFNUNG" in Berlin and "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta send heavy weapons to Ukraine" in Gießen, marking her as a politically engaged and formally adventurous artist. She is also a professor at the University of Arts in Social Contexts, Ottersberg since 2024.
