Context

Inspired by the ecology of her local coastline, Manon Awst’s ‘Intertidal bliss’ depicts oyster shells colonised by barnacles. Oysters are filter-feeders that purify water ecosystems, and they coexist successfully with other organisms to create rich, intimate habitats that you can also become part of.

About Manon Awst

Welsh artist Manon Awst combines architecture, sculpture, and performance to create a captivating synthesis. Born and raised on the rugged coast of Anglesey, she studied architecture in Cambridge before turning to art. Her creative journey took her to Berlin, where she spent a decade as part of the artist duo Awst & Walther, gaining international recognition. Awst's works, often site-specific and ecologically inspired, explore the complex relationships between humans, nature, and landscape. Whether it's installations of mussel shells in Berlin or performances at Neolithic sites in Wales, her art consistently prompts reflection on our connection to the environment. Today, Awst lives in Caernarfon, where she develops innovative projects at the intersection of art and ecology, most recently as a Future Wales Fellow.

Fun fact

She has a long-term installation on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Berlin made entirely with Welsh mussel shells. Have a look next time you’re there.

Instructions

The motifs are modular so you can choose to have all shells tattooed or just a selection of 1, 2 or 3 (the small collection of shells in the middle is 1 motif). They can also be dispersed along the body but not placed any closer together than shown.
