Context

What is the illusion that must fuck off? The world as we knew it, or the one suspended in mid-air? The design comes from a tattoo Brad saw on the nape of a mysterious man named Brane, often spotted in a small Adriatic seaside town. Brane repeats “Fuck Off Illusion” as a mantra – a reminder to reject self-deception, tattooed where he cannot see it. He told Brad he’s a master of out-of-body travel and that most of his friends live on other planets. They’ve told him since childhood that earth is where people prepare for hell. Fuck Off Illusion, give me a ticket to hell!

About Brad Downey

Brad Downey, born in 1980 in Louisville, Kentucky, is an artist who defies easy categorisation. Downey's nomadic childhood laid the groundwork for his globe-trotting artistic career. In 1998 he cut his teeth studying film at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he directed a documentary on street art that caught the eye of the art world. In 2003, Downey hopped across the pond to London's prestigious Slade School of Art, honing his skills in painting and sculpture.
Known as the "most known unknown artist," Downey's work is a cocktail of subversive public art, slapstick humour, and razor-sharp social commentary. His artistic playground spans from the bustling streets of Berlin to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, leaving no corner of the world untouched by his creative mischief. Downey's art consistently pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo. Now based in Berlin, Downey continues to shake up the art world with his unpredictable blend of sculpture, performance, and urban intervention. His work, which has been showcased in galleries from Dubai to Helsinki, proves that art doesn't need a stuffy museum to make an impact – sometimes, all it takes is a keen eye and a willingness to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Instructions

The motif can be done using any tattoo technique, including crude methods like stick and poke. This method involves manually dipping a single needle into ink and ‘poking’ it into the skin to create a design, without the use of an electric tattoo machine – also known as a ’hand poke’ tattoo. While all tattoo techniques are suitable, the ideal placement for the motif is on the back of the neck.
